I Work With Individuals, Couples, Families, & Groups

Individual Therapy

I approach therapy with the belief that everyone who enters counseling is in transition. They are feeling distressed and want to experience a greater sense of satisfaction in their relationships, jobs, and sense of self. This helps me to understand how your past has influenced you and how that may be impacting current decisions and relationships.  I am also influenced by my training in short term solution focused work so that the time you spend with me can empower you to create a more fulfilling life. My ideal client is one who is motivated, willing to risk changing their thinking, in order to create greater self-satisfaction.

Couples Therapy

My work with couples includes gaining a solid understanding of their family history, coping skills, joys, and areas of frustration in their relationship with their partner. Often couples have not had healthy models for communicating, or have been sidetracked by life situations, jobs, or child-rearing. If they have not found comfort and support in their relationship mistrust and misunderstanding can take over. My approach is active but collaborative. I focus on identifying miscommunication or incomplete communication and helping them to find more opportunities for connection , trust and respect.

I am an older woman in IT. Everything they say about women in IT work is true. I came to Shelley when I had given up hope, feeling like I had failed, and was trying to figure out an exit plan on my own terms. Shelley helped me find the confidence that I had done what I needed to all along and could face the future and my retirement with that same confidence.

My husband and I have worked with Shelley for several years. She has helped us understand our differences through which we have learned to effectively communicate. Shelley is also a great coach, extremely perceptive with her clients, and has guided me through some difficult career transitions.

Shelly Lazear has had a profound impact on my life. I have worked with her as both a therapist and a coach for years, and the results speak for themselves. I have increased my income, my emotional intelligence and my overall well-being because of the sessions we’ve held. I cannot thank her enough.

Jane

I was referred to Shelley through my Employee Assistance Program to address my anxiety-related insomnia and work-related stress. I look forward to my sessions with Shelley and frequently leave her office noodling over in my mind some astute question she asked during the session. Shelley has a specific gift for helping clients navigate midlife transitions through my work with Shelley I was able to step into and claim the full power that comes with turning 40.

Shelley always greeted me with a smile. She listened carefully, asked questions and gave feedback. With her insight and support I put issues related to my childhood, marriage, and transition into retirement into a perspective by which I developed understanding and found solutions and comfort. She has given me the tools and confidence to handle future problems when they come up as well as the option to return anytime. Look no further for a therapist than Shelley Lazear.
